JUNK: Welcome Aboard
Welcome Aboard JUNK - a kontiki-style raft that sailed between Long Beach, California and Honolulu, Hawaii during the summer of 2008. Onboard and on-mission were Dr. Marcus Erikson and Joel Paschal of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. The reason? To raise awareness about plastic in our oceans.

Their raft was made of 15,000 plastic bottles contained in recycled fishing nets, and a retired Cessna 310 fuselage.

After 87 days and more than 4,100 kilometres of open ocean waters, the team made it safely to their destination.

But the journey doesn't end there.

Marcus and another partner embarked on a bike tour dubbed JUNKride. Departing from Vancouver on April 4, the tour will take the duo down to Tijuana, Mexico.

Along the way, the team is making frequent stops to speak and raise awareness about the "plastic soup" witnessed aboard JUNKraft.
