Giant flaming musical pipes!
Pipes are very effective devices for creating resonant waves. Heck, many of the most common musical instruments - from trombones to flutes to pipe organs - depend on this phenomenon. This piece demonstrates a few unusual ways to get musical notes from pipes.
The last demonstration - the steel pipe humming over the propane burner - requires a piece of heavy-duty metal mesh pushed about 1/5 of the way up the tube. The mesh heats up in the propane flame and causes hot air to rise vigorously up the tube. That hot air resonates with
a frequency that's determined by the length of the pipe.
If you try this yourself (and I hope you do!), use various types and lengths of pipe until you find one that works best. It is definitely a trial and error method to find a good singing pipe. And be sure to wear good gloves! Those metal pipes are excellent conductors of heat and they can get hot!
